We are always trying to find countries that will enable us to have a better life. There are a variety of reasons for migrating: moving to study, seeking asylum to escape violence, taking refuge after being displaced due to environmental factors, to escape poverty, for seeking a superior healthcare system or just for a better life. One of the best indicators of an excellent country for any person – for a better life – is how women are treated there; an index which gauges women safety.
Women are faced with much difficulty, living in any country. There are many issues that surround them; gender pay gap, the stigma surrounding periods, pressures to behave a certain way and adhere to certain norms, or the unceasing sexual harassment they are subjected to. Women faced with such difficulties have to battle through them and have to navigate tough challenges.
However, there are some countries around the world that offer a safer life for females. Compared to other countries, these ones have a very low level of crime against women – such as sexual assault.
A consultancy company, New World Health, gathered and analysed data, releasing their findings in their 2019 Global Wealth Migration Review report.
The report evaluates changes in global wealth. It states, “Women safety is one of the best ways to gauge a country’s long term wealth growth potential, with a correlation of over 90% between historic wealth growth and woman safety levels. This means that wealth growth is boosted by strong levels of woman safety in a country.”
The key indicator crimes against women that are measured for this report include rape, human trafficking, general assaults such as acid attacks, and slavery.

Safest countries for women by region:
- Europe: Malta, Monaco, Iceland, Switzerland.
- Asia Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea.
- Africa: Mauritius, Botswana, Namibia.
- Americas: USA, Canada.
For this report, crime data from each country was assessed. The results were based on the percentage of each female population that fell victim to one of the crimes. There were 195 countries that were assessed but only 58 of them had ‘reasonably reliable crime statistics.’ Accordingly, countries that had unreliable crime statistics were excluded from the report.
Additionally, it was found that countries such as India and South Africa are wrongly portrayed in media as being the ‘least safe countries for women.’ The report states that these two countries are amongst the 58 countries with “reasonably reliable crime statistics so it is unfair to say they are the least safe.” They are more transparent than the 130+ countries worldwide with unreliable statistics. This is an outcome of women being free to report crimes that happened against them in these countries – also a key indicator used by the report because, in over 40 countries, women can be arrested for simply reporting sexual assault and rape. The report concludes that India and South Africa fall into the mid-range (80-90 out of 195 countries).
The report also mentions that cities such as London and Paris have become less safe over the past few years. However, the ranking of United Kingdom (UK) and United States of America (USA) were not mentioned, despite both these countries likely being of the 58 with reliable crime statistics.
Another report, The Global Peace Index Report 2019, by a non-governmental organization called Institute for Economics and Peace, ranks the safest countries in the world. They assess a total of 163 countries along with 23 different indicators to determine the degree to which a country is safe or dangerous. Factors include level of distrust, political instability, potential terrorist acts, violent conflicts etc.
According the Global Peace Index report 2019, the safest countries are:
- Iceland
- New Zealand
- Portugal
- Austria
- Denmark
- Canada
- Singapore
- Slovenia
- Japan
- Czech Republic
Many of the safest countries using the Global Peace Index coincide with the 2019 Global Wealth Migration report’s findings for the safest countries for women. Nordic countries such as Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden remain the top safest countries – and they have been stable for the past 10 years.
Contrary to this, the UK ranks at 45th on the Global Peace Index. USA ranks at 128th amongst 163 countries, worse than South Africa (127th) but just above Saudi Arabia (129th).
Moving to stable and safer countries has its perks – whether its learning a new culture, a new language, cooking new foods, building your life and career – one way or another your life will change. The factors that people would want to look at depend on their reasons for moving – for example, factors such as work-life balance will give a slightly different picture of the top 10 or 20 destinations. These reports – and many others – allow for better decisions to be made by all people. For instance, students can chose the destinations that would be best not only for their studies but also to continue to live a life where they can manifest their ideals and positively contribute to society.

Great article! Very useful information. (I’m considering a move and this really helped inform my choice) 🙂
I’m surprised that Canada wasn’t placed higher on the list and also surprised that the portrayal of countries like Africa and India is actually incorrect.
